Speycasting

The Spey CastThe Spey cast is a unique form of fly cast which was developed on the River Spey system. The essential element of the cast is in the formation of a D loop of fly line which generates and maintains tension on the rod tip from its friction through contact with the water. The fly should not leave the water or come behind the angler. A single or double Spey is performed according to the bank one is fishing.

The Spey Cast
There are a number of advantages to the Spey cast:

  • The cast can be used where trees or a high bank prevent an overhead cast.
  • The cast is safer to the angler, especially in gusty conditions.
  • The angler will experience fewer tangles (wind knots are very unusual).
  • Consistently longer casts can be generated by Speycasting.

A number of excellent books have been written on the Speycasting instruction, but we believe this cast can only be learnt by practical demonstration and with rod in hand. This is a dynamic cast which does not lend itself to line drawings!

Ponoi RiverWe enjoy teaching the cast to beginners - we can have a novice performing the cast with 20 minutes tuition. We are also often asked to help anglers with considerable previous experience who need minor adjustments to their execution i.e. fly turnover, distance casting, using a sunkline/sinktip etc. The Spey cast will allow you to catch Salmon from lies that many anglers would not attempt to cover.

We can offer individual tuition and guiding, or you may want to join one of our lodge parties.
